It is the classic outdoor event dilemma: LED screen or projector? Both display a picture, but in the real conditions of an event, the result is nothing alike. Here is why.
Brightness: the deciding factor
A projector throws light onto a screen. As soon as there is ambient light — sunshine, late afternoon, stage lighting — the picture fades and loses all contrast. Outdoors in daytime, it is often unreadable.
An LED screen emits its own light, with very high brightness (several thousand nits). The result: a sharp, saturated picture, even in full sun. For outdoor use, there is no comparison.
Installation and reliability
- Projector: needs plenty of throw distance and a taut screen, and remains vulnerable to wind and rain.
- LED screen: modular, free-standing, weather-resistant depending on the configuration. It goes wherever you want it, with no projection distance to worry about.
Format and impact
LED screens come from 1 to 28 m² and keep the same picture quality whatever the size. A projector, on the other hand, loses brightness as the picture gets bigger. For a large format that a crowd can see, LED is the obvious choice. (See our size guide.)
What about the budget?
A projector may look cheaper at first, but for a successful outdoor event, renting a turnkey LED screen (delivery, installation and on-site operation included) gives you a far better result and complete peace of mind.
In short
| Criterion | Projector | LED screen |
|---|---|---|
| Daylight / outdoors | ❌ washed out | ✅ vivid |
| Large format | ⚠️ loses brightness | ✅ consistent quality |
| Installation | throw distance + screen | free-standing, flexible |
| “Wow” effect | limited | strong |
